Victorian Greenhouses
A victorian greenhouse typically has a lot of glazing visible with a minimalist structure, and can be either full height or a dwarf wall style greenhouse. Our range includes both large and small victorian glasshouses, with both aluminium and wooden frames available.
You can customise your victorian style greenhouse with either horticultural glass, toughened safety glass, or polycarbonate glazing.
What is a Victorian Style Greenhouse?
What makes a greenhouse Victorian is tall eaves, large glazing panels, and thin frame struts.
They're also known as Victorian glasshouse or orangery, because the glazing dominates their appearance. They are usually tall enough and have a large enough footprint for you to walk around in them. You can customise them with roof vents, extra opening doors and double doors, staging, and installation.
Steep roof pitches, plenty of headroom, shelving, hanging baskets, and ventilation are staple concepts in Victorian design, and still show great benefits in greenhouse design today. Many stately homes still use their Victorian greenhouses much as they were so many years ago.
By keeping the most effective design elements of that era and incorporating the benefits of modern materials and manufacturing techniques, we can offer all of the beauty of the Victorian heyday with the best in greenhouse function and efficiency. And these structures are built to last.
South West Greenhouses are victorian glasshouse suppliers, with a range available to buy online with free UK delivery.
History
The Victorian Era is almost synonymous with hard work and major advances in getting as much benefit from that work as possible. It was a time of really leveraging mechanical advantage and the resources readily at hand, provided by the nature around them. It is no surprise then to know that the Victorians were experts in the use of greenhouses.
Victorian Greenhouse Sizes
We have both small and large greenhouses available. You can choose the size of your Victorian greenhouse from a range of options, and your choice will likely be determined by the space you have in your garden to fit it.
Think about where you want the door to face, and make sure there's enough room to use it properly. You may also want to consider the shape, as some gardens are best suited to a t-shaped greenhouse where the door is in the middle.
They can become almost like another garden room, with the large glass panes making them a great suntrap, as well as a great growing environment.
Remember the larger the traditional greenhouse, the more maintenance and cleaning you'll have to do. There may also be a greater chance of damage during adverse weather conditions.
Greenhouse Accessories
There are various accessories that you can add to our range of Victorian glasshouses, such as rainwater collection and auto vents. If you want to grow plants over the winter, then consider a greenhouse heater as well. Greenhouse shading can be used to protect plants during the hot summer months.
Victorian Greenhouse Types
Small Victorian Greenhouses
Our victorian range comes in a variety of smaller sizes for when your space is limited, including our small greenhouses, even smaller mini greenhouses, and the very small cold frames.
Large Victorian Greenhouses
If you need a very large victorian greenhouse, then some of the Elite range goes up to 20ft in length, including the 6x20 Elite Dwarf Wall Thyme Painted Finish and the 6x20 Elite Thyme Painted Finish.
Aluminium Frame Victorian Glasshouses
For those who prefer the look of an aluminium frame, with the thin lines that showcase the glazing really nicely, then you will want to browse our aluminium greenhouses.
Wooden Frame Victorian Greenhouses
For a more traditional appearance, you will want a quality timber frame, and you only get that with our range of wooden greenhouses. These are made from treated timber, to ensure maximum longevity.
Dwarf Wall (Brick Base) Victorian Greenhouses
Our Victorian Greenhouse range includes styles designed to sit on a traditional dwarf wall. We can even provide design specs for the wall required, to ensure a perfect fit. You can shop all dwarf wall greenhouses here.
Victorian Greenhouse Kits
All of our victorian greenhouses are available as kits so that you can self-assemble them at home. This is a great time or money saving option, if you prefer to DIY your greenhouse.
Conservatory Style Victorian Greenhouse
A conservatory style victorian greenhouse gives the appearance of a typical conservatory, with the functionality and growing area of a proper full sized greenhouse. It retains the characteristics of the victorian model, with large glazing and high eaves.
Greenhouse Glazing
We don’t use the thin 2mm, brittle glass of the cheaper greenhouses, opting instead for properly sealed 4mm toughened glass that meets or exceeds all modern safety standards.
Greenhouses, like nearly all Victorian structures, were built for beauty as well as function. Our panes are also much larger than cheaper versions, allowing more light to pass through to your plants and increasing the beauty of your greenhouse.
With the high eaves, large capacity guttering, wide hinged doors, and high roof pitch, your beautiful greenhouse will be an icon of the marriage of beauty and function.
Greenhouse Reviews
Here are a small selection of the thousands of reviews we've had:
Kathryn, 2nd July 2020, reviewed the 6x8 Elite Dwarf Wall Thyme Painted Finish
"Firstly my thanks to Adrian at SW Greenhouses who answered my many questions and helped me to ensure I choose the right specification. Polite, friendly and professional - customer service at its best. The greenhouse is top quality, a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing structure that adds to the gardens interest rather than being one of those that people try to hide behind a hedge or trellis. Elite contacted me to arrange delivery and this went smoothly. It wasn’t the easiest to erect and the instructions were not particularly intuitive, however allow double the time you anticipate or pay for a professional installation! I would highly recommend SW Greenhouses and Elite. Thank you.".
Aideen, 27th August 2015, reviewed the 8x8 Elite Thyme Dwarf Wall Painted Finish
"I got the green finish and paid to have the greenhouse put up. Both well worth the extra cost. It would not be easy to put up with no experience. A very well made high quality product, It looks beautiful."
Les, 30th May 2015, reviewed the 8x8 Elite Thyme Dwarf Wall Painted Finish
