Why Choose a Greenhouse and Important Factors

If you are a keen gardener, a greenhouse may be a must-have. One of the main purposes of a greenhouse is to enable you to look after your plants during the winter months and sow seeds in the early spring. The popularity of greenhouses grew substantially in the 19th century when advancements in technology made glass production much cheaper. These changes enabled a wider range of people to grow exotic fruits and plants in the UK.

The glasshouse became hugely popular in the Victorian era, and many of today’s greenhouses take inspiration from these styles. There are many options available for anyone who wishes to invest in a greenhouse, including cheap readymade options and bespoke greenhouses which can cost much more but give you years upon years of enjoyment and help you create a magnificent visual spectacle in your garden.

Sizes and Shapes

Options are available to you even if you only have a small garden, with some options coming in sizes from just six feet wide. However, you may wish to purchase an eight feet option if you wish to add worktops to both sides. Most greenhouses are rectangular, but lean-to versions are available if you want to install your greenhouse against a wall. Octagonal greenhouses are also available and might be best for your needs if you’re working with a difficult or unusual space. Greenhouses are normally made from aluminium or timber. Although timber is more expensive, it tends to be better for trapping heat.

Glazing

The glazing of your greenhouse will be heavily influential on its cost and the way that it functions. Horticultural glass is the cheapest option but can be hard to clean. The panels can break into large and dangerous shards when damage occurs. Toughened glass will cost you more, but it is safer. Polycarbonate panels can be a good option if you want to avoid glass. This option is cheaper and lighter but will not break. Nonetheless, it doesn’t have as much aesthetic appeal as glass and tends to pop out when winds are strong.

Ventilation and Extras

Look for a greenhouse that comes with ventilation panes. Greenhouses can overheat quickly in the summer. If your garden is located somewhere where strong winds often occur, ensure that the strongest part (known as the gable end) is facing the wind. When you’re positioning your greenhouse, stay away from sloping ground and overhanging trees.
